Qatar Airways-funded Air Italy will fly to Milan
Air Italy will bring nonstop flying from San Francisco International to Italy back into vogue next year when it launches new nonstops to Milan’s Malpensa Airport.
Currently, the only nonstops to Italy from the Bay Area are on Norwegian Air with seasonal summer-only flights from Oakland.
It’s long been rumored that Alitalia would bring back the SFO-Milan nonstops it abandoned back in 2001, but the wobbly national carrier seems to have lost out to Air Italy, a new carrier backed by the deep pockets of Qatar Airways.
This news comes from Italian newspapers, and today an SFO spokesperson has confirmed the new flights.
The Milan Malpensa-San Francisco service will offer four-times-per-week roundtrips on April 10-11, 2019. On April 3, Air Italy will also launch new nonstops between Milan and Los Angeles LAX. The carrier’s current US destinations are New York and Miami.
Air Italy says it will use and Airbus A330-200 on the route, with 24 almost lie-flat seats (configured 2-2-2) in business class and 228 seats in economy class (configured 2-4-2) with ” highly personalized service, Wi-Fi and a wide choice of on-board entertainment.” Take a look at the Air Italy’s A330-200 on SeatGuru and check out photos in the slideshow at the top of this post.
The 12-hour, 6,000-mile nonstop will take off from SFO at 7:10 pm and arrive in Milan at 4:05 pm the following day. On the return, the flight will depart Milan at 1:35 pm and arrive SFO at 5:10 pm.
Air Italy is not a part of any airline alliance, but you can earn and burn Avios points with its Meridiana Club program on these flights. The carrier is owned 49% by Qatar Airways (a Oneworld partner), and is based in Milan. It was previously known as Meridiana Airlines, but changed names in March 2018 to Air Italy.
