Proud to be European:

The European Union (EU) is a politico-economic union of 28 member states that are located primarily in Europe. It covers an area of 4,324,782 km2, with an estimated population of over 508 million.

The EU has developed an internal single market through a standardised system of laws that apply in all member states. Within the Schengen Area, passport controls have been abolished.EU policies aim to ensure the free movement of people, goods, services, and capital, enact legislation in justice and home affairs, and maintain common policies on trade, agriculture, fisheries, and regional development. The monetary union was established in 1999 and came into full force in 2002. It is currently composed of 19 member states that use the euro as their legal tender.

Covering 7.3% of the world population, the EU in 2014 generated a nominal gross domestic product (GDP) of 18.495 trillion US dollars, constituting approximately 24% of global nominal GDP and 17% when measured in terms of purchasing power parity. Additionally, 26 out of 28 EU countries have a very high Human Development Index, according to the UNDP.

EU member states own the estimated largest net wealth in the world, equal to 30% of the $223 trillion global wealth.

The euro is the second largest reserve currency as well as the second most traded currency in the world after the United States dollar.

English is the most spoken language in the EU, being spoken by 51% of the EU population when counting both native and non-native speakers.

The economy of the European Union generates a GDP (nominal) of about €14.3 trillion (US$18.5 trillion in 2014) and a GDP (PPP) of about €12.7 trillion (US$16.8 trillion in 2014) according to the International Monetary Fund, which makes it the largest economy in the world

"Being upset is not relevant here. Europe is a huge trading block, it has 500 million citizens, and it's a bigger economy than the United States. We have to live with their laws"

( Omer Tene, vice president of research and education at IAPP)
